“Windrush Day” will be the theme of Friday’s Mentor Time and Assembly.

This week’s mentor session will focus on Windrush Day, which takes place every year on 22nd June. It marks the arrival of the ship HMT Empire Windrush in 1948, bringing people from the Caribbean to help rebuild Britain after the war. These individuals – known as the Windrush Generation – played a vital role in shaping modern British culture, public services, and community life.

During the session, pupils will explore:

  • Who the Windrush Generation were
  • Why they came to Britain
  • The challenges they faced, including discrimination and the later Windrush scandal
  • The lasting contributions they made to music, food, language, sport, and the NHS

The aim is to help pupils understand the importance of Windrush in British history and to celebrate the diversity and resilience that continue to enrich our society today.
