Computing & Information Technology (IT) at Park View

Subject Introduction

At Park View School, students study Computing at Key Stage 3 and Information Technology (IT) at Key Stage 4. Our curriculum is designed to help pupils develop practical digital skills, creativity, problem‑solving abilities, and confidence in using technology safely and effectively making them ready for post 16 life.

Computing – Key Stage 3

Students in Key Stage 3 explore a range of creative and interactive software, including Scratch, allowing them to design and run their own programs. Pupils learn the basics of scripting to create games, animations, and digital music.
We have also recently introduced the BBC Micro:bit, a programmable device that enables students to experiment with physical computing and real‑world interaction.

ICT – Key Stage 4

Our Key Stage 4 ICT curriculum provides students with the essential digital skills needed for modern life and the workplace.

WJEC Entry Level computing

Entry level computing focuses on building practical, confidence-building digital skills that are directly applicable to daily life, further education, and future employment.

• Planning and Using IT Systems: Developing an understanding of selecting the correct software application (word processing, spreadsheets, or graphics tools) to fulfil specific tasks.
• Practical Task Execution: Students gain the ability to create basic documents, managing files safely, using automated routines, and navigating digital interfaces.
• Review and Safety: Students learn how to evaluate their own digital work.

Assessment Method

There are no formal, timed written examinations for this qualification. Instead, assessment is entirely evidence-based:

• Students compile a portfolio of work or a folder of completed, realistic tasks.
• Assessment is continually verified internally by teachers and externally moderated by WJEC.
• This approach focuses heavily on recognising what a student can achieve, reducing exam anxiety and making it an ideal framework for building foundational digital competence.

Visits and enrichment

Students have the opportunity to visit The Word in South Shields Marketplace — a state‑of‑the‑art digital learning hub featuring green‑screen technology, 3D printing, and a range of coding and creative tools. These visits allow pupils to experience cutting‑edge technology in an inspiring environment.
