Art and Design Intent Statement
At Park View, all students study Art & Design at Key Stage 3 and they have the choice for further study at KS4. Students are taught in mixed ability classes in order to broaden every pupil’s creative experiences and to develop an ethos of sharing and supporting one another through the learning process. We aim to promote a broad understanding and appreciation of the visual world through both making art and engaging with, analysing and reflecting upon the art work of various artists, photographers, craftspeople and designers. Pupils are supported in developing their communication, social skills, and visual awareness and fundamentally encouraged to be true to themselves. The very nature of art allows the teacher to contribute to the intellectual, emotional, social, physical and spiritual development of students.
As pupils move through the KS3 curriculum they are offered a broad and balanced curriculum within a range of specialisms – painting, drawing, 3-D sculpture and printmaking. Independent learning tasks through the use of facilitated teaching allow students to develop their ability in managing their own interests through learning.
Throughout Key Stage 3 students are given opportunities to improve their skills in generating ideas through artist research, planning visual ideas through experimentation and evaluating their own and others work in preparation for art in KS4. More importantly, projects are malleable and constantly evolving as they are developed alongside pupils’ specific needs, interests and input in order to ensure that everyone is engaged and enthusiastic about their learning.
If pupils opt to do art in KS4 they will be matched to an accredited course relevant to their needs and abilities. This is to ensure that everyone can succeed to the best of their ability and have formal recognition for their achievements. Pupils will continue to develop their basic technical skills whilst becoming more independent and selective about what they do. At present KS4 pupils work towards gaining a GCSE qualification with AQA.
